Year 4 Class Page

What will Year 4 do this Half Term?
Below is a summary of what the pupils in Mrs Davis' class will be covering this half term. The theme for this term is ‘Terrifying Transport Disasters’ , a topic all about imaginary ways of travelling in Literacy and transport disasters of the past, such as the Titanic and the Hindenburg.
Literacy
The children will be involved in stories from imaginary settings using Wallace and Gromitt’s ‘A Grand Day out’ as a stimulus, newspaper reports about transport events and poetry based on ‘From a Railway Carriage’ by Robert Louis Stephenson. Handwriting and spellings will be taught each week. Pupils will continue their hard work on the reading scheme and will be developing their reading skills through the Guided Reading sessions.
Numeracy
The main topics for Numeracy this term will be ‘Handling Data and Measures’, ‘Calculating, measuring and understanding shape’ and ‘Securing Number facts, relationships and calculating’. Most numeracy homework will be available on the learning platform or on a sheet, any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
Science
We will build on our existing knowledge of forces and learn that forces can be measured and compared. We will also focus on friction as a force which exists between objects moving across solid surfaces and opposes motion, and the forces of air resistance and water resistance which oppose the motion of objects moving through air and water.
Experimental and investigative work focuses on:
- deciding what evidence should be collected when planning and carrying out a fair test
- making measurements using a forcemeter
- looking for patterns in results, interpreting and suggesting explanations for these.
Information and Communication Technology
ICT focuses on Logo and Control. The children will be writing their own sequences for the Probot Robot and using their skills with a computer based program to draw a repeating pattern.
Religious Education – Jesus and Authority
The aim of this term’s RE is to explore the Christian concept of Jesus the ‘Light of the World’ and the multi-faceted metaphor of bringing light into people’s lives.
Design Technology
As ‘Transport Inventors’ we will be designing and making our own form of imaginary transport to take us to our imaginary settings based on our stories in Literacy. Skill development will include looking at existing forms of imaginary transport, such as The Tardis, Hogwarts Train and Wallace and Gromitt’s Rocket!!
Music
Music will be taught in conjunction with the Lancashire Music Service. Pupils will have the opportunity to learn to play a brass instrument and develop their music skills with the help of a specialist music teacher for the year. Please can your child try to practice for at least five minutes a day.
French
We will be developing our French skills through the topic of transport – developing our vocabulary for different forms of transport, places within our town and giving basic directions.
Physical Education
In Gymnastics, pupils will develop a range of actions, body shapes and balances they will include in a performance. They will also create gymnastic sequences that meet a theme or set of conditions, working carefully with a partner.
P.S.H.E/SEAL
This term we look at ‘Getting on and Falling out’. We will focus on cooperation and valuing diversity, and focusing on four key content areas: developing the social skills of friendship, working well together in a group, managing anger and resolving conflict.
