Year 2 Class Page

Welcome to Year 2

This half term we will be exploring the thrilling topic of weather!

Literacy

During this half term, we will be concentrating on story writing and poetry.  We will be exploring how to make our writing more exciting by using wow words and similes (as good as gold.)

We will be examining the different versions of traditional tales (like Rumplestiltskin) before writing our own stories.  We will also be looking at speech marks and question marks.

Please do continue to help your child by reading frequently – especially with SATs on the horizon.

Numeracy

As well as improving our mental maths skills by adding and subtracting a one digit number to or from a two digit number (58 + 6=), we will be concentrating on place value and partitioning into tens and units.  Later we will be looking at measuring and number stories such as 18 + * = 26

R.E.

This half term our R.E is based around the Easter theme of Celebration and Symbols.  As well as discussing the Easter story we will be looking at the different symbols Christians use to celebrate the festival.  This year is the Year of the Bible so we will be enjoying stories from the Old Testament this half term.

SEAL

Our SEAL topic is Going for Goals

P.E.

The children will be enjoying P.E. on a Tuesday and Thursday.

Please ensure your child brings their FULL P.E. kit to school for these sessions and that all items are labelled.

DIARY DATES

28 Feb             School re-opens

18 March         Red Nose Day

8 April             School finishes for Easter

In preparation for our SATs, I will be sending home spellings with some groups of children (on a Friday).  We will be having a spelling ‘quiz’ each week on a Monday.

To further help your child, please do continue to read with them and also practise their two, five and ten times tables.

Photos and Egg Boxes

If your child would like to bring in photos / pictures of holiday destinations that show hot or cold places, they would be gratefully received.  Please ensure your child’s name is written in pencil on each photo.

Also we are collecting egg boxes for the end of the term.  Thanks!

In Geography we will be studying atlases and globes and pinpointing countries we have visited on holiday.  We will then be focusing on how geographical position affects the weather and climate of both hot and cold countries.

While we will be using ICT in all subjects, we will be using data logging technology to record temperature and rainfall.

In DT we will be designing our own weather gauges.

In Art we will be making stormy, icy and sunny pictures from collage materials.

We will also be learning how to say simple French weather phrases such as ‘Il fait chaud’.

We will be looking at Grouping and Changing Materials in Science; we will be classifying materials according to property (opaque, flexible etc) and looking at what happens when they are heated or cooled.

Gill Fourie will continue to teach music on a Wednesday morning.
